Freesia

The Freesia genus comprises around 20 species within the Iridaceae family which also includes Gladiolus and Iris, two other well-known bulb crops.  The majority of species are native to the Cape Province in South Africa and bear little resemblance to modern day varieties. It is difficult to believe that these species, with their generally much shorter, thinner stems and smaller flowers, form the genetic basis of today’s assortment.
